The Different Stages of Sleep

Stage 1

This is a half awake state and includes daydreaming or going into trance during class in the afternoon. In this stage, your body relaxes, respiration and heart rate slightly drop and you start drifting into a dreamy zone.

This is the doorway stage which paves the way for real sleep.

Stage 2

This is light sleep where you can easily be roused by a simple nudge or tug. In this stage, brain activity exhibits sudden bursts, a gradual attempt by the brain to turn itself off.

Stage 3 and 4

These are the deep sleep stages where your blood pressure, respiration, and heart rate reach their lowest point of the day. This is when the body repairs itself, that time when all the bodybuilders are growing their muscles.

Stage 5

This is the REM stage, also called the dream sleep stage, where it is believed that most of our dreams occur. Brainwaves during this time mimic the brainwaves we have when we’re wide awake and is one of the most fascinating areas of sleep currently being figured out.
