Possibly the most common sleep problem, it is defined as an inability to either get sufficient sleep or fall asleep.

It can be caused by various things including physical pain, an overactive thyroid gland, diabetes, violent muscle twitching, imbalanced nutrition, or taking stimulants before bed time. However, the most common cause of insomnia, as many physicians have found, has been psychological and often manifested as stress, anxiety or loneliness. Losing sleep after the occurence of tragic events is common and are often temporary and you can suddenly return to your normal sleep rhythm after a short time. For some, however, especially those suffering from chronic depression, long-term insomnia is developed and persist for extended periods. Relaxation, meditation, exercise, better sleeping conditions and other alternative therapiesare usually prescribed for those suffering mental and emotional stress.
