Sleepwalking in Children

As many as 40% of children experience sleepwalking between the ages of three and seven. The experience is usually benign with relatively small consequences.

If your child experiences sleepwalking infrequently and with only mild displays, i can usually be outgrown in time,

Be tactful when informing your child of their behavior as being made aware of sleepwalking behavior can cause embarrassment, shame, guilt, anxiety and confusion for children.

Treatment for sleepwalking

While treatment is not necessary for most cases, more severe cases may benefit from any of the following:

* Improving sleep patterns and routines (get the child to bed and wake at the same time, get ample rest)
* Restrict fluids (milk, water, etc.) before bedtime as a full bladder sometimes triggers it
* Remove anything from the bedroom that could be hazardous or harmful to a child.
* Consult the doctor about the problem. Some medications may be contributing to the condition.
* Hypnosis
* psychiatric intervention (for chronic cases)
* A small dose of diazepam or lorazepam eliminates the episodes or considerably reduces them (for chronic cases, under doctors' supervision)
