Learning to Speak from the Diaphragm

Float in SpaceI’ve been speaking from the diaphragm for as long as I can remember. I’m sure I do because I’ve asked voice coaches and they say I do speak correctly and powerfully with my voice. I couldn’t figure out how to help people practice the same because you simply suck the air out of your belly and open your mouth, nothing special although others can’t seem to get used to it.

Saw this little tech while watching American Idol this season. Tried it immediately and I think it’s sweet, considering how many questions I’ve seen in different forums about learning to improve your voice. This is a good way to get used to doing it, right in the comfort of your own room.

1. Lie down on the floor flat on your back hands on your side
2. Raise your head slightly like starting a crunch
3. Your abs must feel a little strain like they’re going in (stomach in, chest out mode)
4. Start speaking (or singing or humming)

Your voice will naturally resonate correctly because you’re kicking out the air from your belly instead of your throat.

P.S. While we’re on the subject of American Idol, it’s a good time to announce an article for next week on “How to Sing Good Karaoke.” It covers choosing the right songs, singing with passion and pinching your testicles for the high notes. Watch out!
